Denison's & Mill Street Helles Bock at the Castle

Post by pootz »

Herold has a fresh keg of Ontario's best helles bock on now at the Castle on King if you're in the area from London Stratford or Gulch stop in for a pint.

New firkin from S-I next week....hope it's the VB porter. 8)

Almost forgot, Denison's is now on tap at the Castle so those in the area don't have to drive to Hamilton for a pint of Michael's finest.

I'm assuming it's not Denison's old Helles Bock... just his hefe and/or dunkle?

Anyone know if Mill Street Helles Bock will appear in bottles? Still have pleasant memories of it, in the stubbies, two (?) years ago.

Derek: It's Mill Street Helles Bock. The Denson's is his excellent (bubblegum/banana aroma) Heffeweizen...trying to get some kegs of Denison Dunkel but it is in short supply. So far just Warsteiner Dunkel but if no Denisons soon, I'm sure we will see some of King's dunkel on tap..or PilsBock...Phil said something about running up a few kegs of unfiltered dunkel for a monthly Castle special.

Last time I asked they said that all MS brews would be available in bottles...probably the new tall necks...haven't seen any...maybe at the Distillery district store? Give 'em a call and let us know...I'd like to keep some of this nice malty herbal woody bock for sipping later in the spring.

I was thisclose to stopping in at the Castle this past Sunday. I was in town to buy a copy of Risk 2210 A.D., but the girlfriend didn't want to bring the baby to the bar, which is understandable.

So close but so far, but if that new Scotch Irish is the VB Porter, you can bet I'll be there for it.

It's Sgt. Major this time around. Based on these posts though, I'll go for VBP next time around.

I just spoke with Harold and the Sgt. Major cask is now on

Harold also mentioned that he's going to Florida soon. He'll be flying out of Detroit and is looking for a great place near the airport to pick up beer on his way back. If you have suggestions, please let him know when you're in for a pint.

Yes the Castle will be closed for 2 weeks in April

That means all that is on tap now will have to go in the next few weeks...possibly at "special prices" to get rid of it before the closure?

It's a reastaurant with a large back seating area around a circular fire place that is separate from the bar....there are kids in there with their parents all the time.

If anyone's talking to Harold, let him know that Merchants Fine Wine in Dearborn has an excellent selection. It's right between Detroit Metro Airport and the Detroit-Windsor border. The address is:

22250 Michigan Ave.
Dearborn, MI 48124

Give 'em a call and let us know...
I went down to Mill Street today. They expect to have the Helles Bock in growlers in about two weeks. Currently, apart from the usual four they bottle, they have the ESB on offer.

I was at Mill street today as well. The ESB growler was $15.50.

I had the Helles Bock on-tap, which was decent. Well brewed, without any flaws. Fairly hop-forward... but lacking that silky maltyness the German's do so well (though still relatively smooth).

I noticed a tank of Anniversary Ale dated March 2nd, it was a fairly golden colour. I was on my way out, so I didn't ask about it.

The anniversary ale is a nice nutty brown ale , their "175th Anniversary Brown Ale". It's only scheduled for a limited run to commemorate the distillery's founding. They had it on tap last Friday, and I just had to pick it up in the store.
