F & M Stonehammer Pils

Post by SteelbackGuy »

I was surprised to find this at my local LCBO in London.

I didn't know it was even available at the LCBO, so imagine my surprise when I saw it!

I haven't had this for about 3 years.

It's fresh, floral, hoppy as hell without being too assertive for the light body. Very delicate very flavourful. There's a hint of sulphur here too which I am attributing to the hard water it is brewed with (assuming this is the case).

I am pleased!

Yeah I really love Stonehammer. It's just such a solid Ontario micro, and so tasty/enjoyable. A great one for any time of the year IMHO.

It's been a while since I've had this one, probably three years ago now on a hot summer day in July on the back patio at the Woolwich Arms in Guelph back when I lived there. It definitely hit the spot. I've immersed myself in the beer scene a great deal since then and tend to prefer dark ales, porters, and stouts when it's -20 like it is today, but sitting here in February and thinking about tipping a pint of the Stonehammer Pilsner back in the sun sounds pretty damn fantastic to me.

Thanks for evoking the memory fellas.

Finally picked up a sixer of the Stonehammer Pilsner last night. It has some lovely floral and herbal notes, rounded out by some bready malts, which help to create a really soft feel in the mouth. This is a very admirable, easy-drinking Ontario brew, and I'll be polishing off the rest of the case at tonight's new year's eve party.

It was amazingly thirst-quenching, so I could see having this on hand in the summer would be a good idea.

What didn't you like about it? Was it off, are you more of a Czech style pils man, or ameri-pils? It definitely is not a brew for a committed ale drinker. Personally, I prefer the Dark Ale.

I bought a six pack of this a few weeks ago from my local LCBO and quite enjoyed it. I was surprised to find that it is also available at the Beer Store at Yonge and Summerhill, where you can buy it in six packs, twelve’s and two fours

Are you saying this is a German style pils? Is it still all Saaz hops?

Yes, still all Saaz. I find our pilsner very similar to a German Pils called "Radeberger". I know when Charles and Rob were working on it, they were going for the Pilsner Urquell type, but I think it is closer to Radeberger.

The lighter malt profile is closer to a German Pils, but when it's all Saaz I still think Czech. :D

Matt, you will be happy to know that when I last bought Stonehammer it was at the suggestion of TBS clerk!! While I've bought it many tiimes before, at the time I was asking for something else that happened to be out of stock, but the clerk suggested Stonehammer. The word is getting out....
