classic rookie mistake!!!

Post by JeffPorter »

I cleaned my bottles (what a pain with the labels - the new HP fliptop labels come off perfectly though...)

I sanitzed my siphoning stuff. my bottle caps.

I primed and I started bottling...I was four 750 ml bottles in before I realized I hadn't sanitized my bottles!!!!

So I put the rest of my bottles in the starsan and kept going from there. I'm keeping those four bottles separate to see what happens and probably drink those first...

Also, I forgot to check my SG...can I check late once it's conditioned for a bit..I tried some of it before I bottled and it still tastes a little sweet and boozy...hopefully the conditioning will help that...I only used 15 L of water so I may have made a bit of a Robust Brown...Anyways, I just want it to be conditioned!!!

Finally, do I REALLY not have to rinse the starsan? That just felt weird!

You might want to look at purchasing a vinator for cleaning your bottles. Just dump in some starsan and press the bottle fown on to the spout and you'll get a good spray of sanitizer in there. It certainly seemed to make the process quicker and easier for us.

bottle trees are handy too. i sanitize 'em and fill up the tree, so you'll never forget that step.

You can get a vinator that sits on the top of your bottle tree. I keep my bottles clean by rinsing them after drinking and drying them on a bottle tree. When I do my bottling, I load up the dishwasher, tell the family not to open it up and put in their dirty dishes, and run a sanitize cycle and then bottle on the counter above the dishwasher.
