The Year of Cider?

Post by El Pinguino »

So last year seemed to be the Year of Lime and Lemon Beers....

I've been watching for banners and posters to see what the new, 'big' think will be this year. It seems like cider perhaps? Keith's Cider seems to be on a big push right now.

Watch out for Kieth's Sour. :o

Dill Pickle Stella is on its way too...

Maybe the next big thing will be tainted beers - bottles with various mysterious infections. :o

This has been on my mind for sometime.. are there many cider drinkers on here?
I first got into craft beer my trying to have a new beer everyday for a year. I picked up a cider mistakenly one time thought it was okay. But not for me. And never counted it on my beer mission as it was a cider and I don't consider that to be a style of beer.. Do any of you? I mean I look at it as what it is a fermented apple juice..
But since joining that untappd app, There is a badge for consuming so many cider "beers" and I've considered picking up a bunch of ciders to try.
Like beer are there big differences from one cider to the next? I've only ever had a Strongbow in the can and once on tap with Guinness I believe it was called a Black Velvet.

I'm not huge on cider but from time to time will give one a shot. The Sam Smith cider that was in the LCBO was pretty good. The only cider I will pick up though for the most part is Stowford Press, it is really really good.

Yes. But unfortunately, most of the ciders available in Ontario are mass-produced versions that are the Bud/Coors/Blue of the cider world, so we don't get a good picture of how much variation there can be.

Hopefully, the increasing popularity of mainstream ciders will lead to the LCBO bringing in more "micro" ciders. Ciders from smaller producers like Thornbury and Duke's (from Tree Brewing) are a good step - they're very nice products, but sort of like stepping up from Blue to a craft brewed lager or pale ale. Maybe in a couple of years, we'll start getting some serious artisanal stuff.

I enjoy a good cider once in a while. The LCBO had a cider in vintages last year from Quebec that was decent. But for the most part the best stuff I have tried was brought back from out of province.

My girlfriend likes ciders. She prefers them tart. From what she's been able to try so far, her favourite is Waupoos. When I pointed out the Keith's cider she laughed.

Spirit Tree cider (I've only seen it at Volo) is amazing. drinks more like a wine than a cider.

The Waupoos is really nice. They have a peach cider that comes out in the summer, which is tasty as well.
I don't always drink beer ... because sometimes my friends win and we have to go to macro-only establishments.

I've noticed Spirit Tree popping up in a few places actually... another reason I wondered if Cider was the 'in' thing now.

I'm not a cider drinker...just don't enjoy it much usually. Spirit Tree has some good stuff though...it's worth a visit to their Cidery on a weekend, fun little place for some cider, soup and lunch.

The most recent cider I've tried from the LCBO is that Carlsberg one (I forget the name) that's fairly new - well, new to any LCBO near me. I didn't like it at all as it was just way too sweet. Waupoos is probably the best I've tried but I haven't seen it in ages. I usually just make do with Gaymers and the occasional Stowford but I'm not crazy about either.

Just for the record it is called Somersby Apple Cider.
