Hey, Cass (and anyone else who wants to chime in) - has there been any thought to having some sort of official Bar Towel pub night or get-together of some sort?

I suppose that events like the micro festival at C'est What will always end up attracting enough Bar Towelers that a small group will end up congregating. But I think that getting together for a few brews outside of such a busy or specialized event might be nice.

It may be an ambitous project, but what would folks think about having regular get-togethers (like monthly or bimonthly) that happen at a different place each time? I'm sure that many of you are like me and tend to go to the same places most of the time since you are familiar with them and/or they're close to home or work - and also like me, you are therefore missing out on some great places.

For example, I went to Denison's for the first time ever today just because I happened to be in the area (and I think I'm in love with their wheat beer...) - having a roving gathering of folks who are as interested in good beer as I am would definately give me an excuse to check out more places that I might not otherwise think to visit.

So what do y'all think? Good idea? Bad idea? Any thoughts on a good place to give this a first shot to see if people will show up?

Hey Greg,

I think it's an excellent idea, one that we've bandied about in the past. The only reason nothing's materialized is effort on my part and everyone's busy schedules.

I think if we could settle on a date that would work for most of the Bartowelers that would be the first step. Perhaps we can kick off with an event that most of us can make it to, and have semi-regular events from then on for those that can attend.

Realistically I say we target a date at least a month away. Perhaps late September/early October, once the summer season slows down a bit.

Any thoughts?

Could we combine the pub night with a tour and tasting? Mill Street is scheduled to open in late August (that is, according to the website, does anyone have anymore concrete information?). It would be a nice way to welcome them and encourage the production of quality beer.

Cheers, Joe

I think Mill Street would be a great place for the first Bar Towel gathering.

When we poked our head in during our visit to the art exhibition at the Distillery a couple of weekends ago, I'm pretty sure that the Mill Street rep said something about being open in "6 weeks or so".

There is another art exhibition taking place down there on Saturday Sept. 28th that my wife and I were planning on checking out. So perhaps a Bar Towel visit to Mill Street could be scheduled that day as well?

September 28th is not a good date as I just posted a Beer Event on that date at The Bow & Arrow (look under Beer Events).

Unless... we meet there. I understand it's not really a beer sampling or beer show or tour, however it's a hell of a great time and excellent gathering to get to know people.

I suggest we try to do it on a sunday. I'd assume there is less going on and more people could make it. maybe we could get joe to open just for us. joe?

Yeah, the Bow & Arrow thing looks like fun - but it's also 50 bucks, which might be a little too spendy for some people.

How about meeting at Mill Street in the afternoon during the art exhibition, and then those planning on going to the Lobster Feast could head up to the Bow & Arrow together? Sort of a mini-pub-crawl.

Folks seemed to be agreeable to the idea of meeting at the Mill St. Brewery in the Distillery District (King & Parliment area) on the afternoon of the 28th, and then those who are interested in the Lobster Feast at the Bow & Arrow can head up there as a group afterwards.

This will be contingent, of course, on Mill St. actually being open by then. I'm pretty sure that someone from there has posted to the forum a couple of times - does anyone happen to remember who it was and/or know how they can be contacted?

Unfortunately, this weekend probably won't work for me. I'm planning to head to Chicago for the weekend. Perhaps we can pick another weekend for a pub night? (not to say the Mill St. plan shouldn't go ahead, but I'd like to find a night where I can meet everyone too)

Truth is, maybe a weeknight works better anyway. I'm ambivalent to either, but the way I see it is that everybody is in town on weeknights. No matter, though, I'll try and make it whenever it is.

I agree that weeknights would probably be better generally (except for Tuesdays in my case - I'm busy with my radio show that night). September 28th just came up because of the Lobster night at the Bow & Arrow, and my suggestion of visiting Mill St. in the afternoon since my wife and I will be in the area that day for an art show.

Perhaps we should pick a day each month (like "first Thursday of every month" or something like that), pick a couple of pubs for the first couple of months, and see how it goes.

In fact - it was just an example, but how would the first Thursday of the month work for folks? That means the first one would be next Thursday, September 5th - too soon?

If it's good, any ideas on a location for the first one (and the next couple as well)? I'd suggest Smokeless Joe for the first one since my wife and I have been planning to go there for a while - but she'll be out of town next Thursday and she'd kill me if I went without her.
