Don't think I've seen this mentioned yet.

The July/August edition of Wine Access Magazine has the results of the the inaugural Canadian Brewing Awards and an article on Brewpubs.

Many of the results are . . . well . . . interesting. I mean Black label and Moosehead beating Cameron's Premium Lager in the American/Canadian Style Lager category. Walkerville and Brick beat Creemore in the Amber Lager Category. There only one I agree with is Trois Pistoles winning the Strong/Belgian Style Ale category. Anyway . . . .

They have the gold medal winners in each catagory listed on their website at http://www.wineaccess.ca/beer-awards.htm

I'd say that I agree with about 1/4 of their choices. Nice to see Church Key and Black Oak getting some props. But there are some pretty ridiculous choices in there as well.

As someone pointed out to me, if you have a copy of the magazine, note how many of the bottles on the cover also have print ads inside.

That said I was pleased with most of them, and obviously suprised by some of them. It almost makes me want to do a blind taste test on some of them to see what I would rate them unbiased.

In the magazine's listings, Nelson's Oatmeal Stout won both a bronze and silver metal in the same category. Must be one fine beer.

I'm assuming that many breweries chose not to participate. McAuslan, for example, is nowhere to be found.

I think it's pretty funny that the 7-person judging panel included 2 beer judges and 5 folks from Wine Access' staff. How well do they know beer?

Moosehead, Black Label, Molson Dry and Brick all beat Cameron's Lager. I think that alone should be a good indication of how well the judges know their beer...

Silly, just silly. Why are there so many award winners? Does everybody get a prize? Why is Maudite in the "amber ale", Begbie Kolsch in "wheat" and Keith's in "India Pale Ale"? I'm baffled.
