The people at InterBrew are at it again. Löwenbrau (Munich) and Späten are now in the InterBrew fold. Its not so much the fact that they own so many breweries that galls me, if they let the breweries brew the way they always did, fine. Its the added marketing and adverising budgets they throw at their products that bother me. (for obvious reasons, envy be one of them)
The average drinker can walk into a bar and see 11 draught taps: Blue, 50, Blue Light, Keiths IPA, Keiths seasonal, Beck's, Löwenbrau, Stella Artois, Leffe Blonde, Leffe Brune, Hoegarden and not realise that no matter which beer he choses, all the money goes into the same pocket. The swag and "incentives" that go along with carrying a portfolio like this are huge and the small brewer, or importer, can't even begin to pony up the kind of cash needed to compete. I know I'm ranting to the converted here...most of you know all of this already. Please support the bars and restaurants that support micros and smaller importers. Without them, we would lose much of what is different out there in terms of beer and wine.

Well, personally...

I can't wait until 3 companies control all the beer brewing in the world, and all the world's beer is produced in 3 to 6 breweries. I get excited just thinking about going into a bar, and being able to say "Beer" without a question being asked. The same goes for things like cheese ... am I ever sick and tired of these different varieties and small companies. They charge you an arm and a leg for this "variety" - I won't shed a single tear when Phillip Morris controls the world's cheese production.

I know I've heard a lot of you talk about how variety is interesting, and forces brewers to make high quality products, but who are you kidding? Everyone knows that one beer is as good as the next. Those small breweries are just wasting everyone's time and money when we all know that business, for efficiency's sake, should be left to the big boys. No offense to the brewers on this site, but you might as well give up now ... there's simply no room for mediaevalists in a 21st century marketplace.

It's all entertainment...Perry, I must again applaud the results Interbrew achieved through Labatt/Oland because there is real variety in that line up despite the profit stream. Look at how bad the lame Molson attempts have been in comparison. Canadian, Ex, Heineken, Rickards (!@#$%!) line of crap. I may not like the payoffs but I have to admit, their draught efforts have improved the knowledge level on draught beer along with all the free equipment.
I guess my point is that if we could see a base level, organized gorilla marketing campaign based on common sense, value added themes in draught beer, then we would see much stronger results from the micro's. I know... then why don't I do it...
...cuz.
